CHRISTMAS MARKET IN ESSEN
November 11 - December 23 2023
One of the largest Christmas Markets, Weihnachtsmärkte, in Ruhr Metropolis came into being in the early nineteen sixties. With an international theme from a different partner country each year, Essen creates one of the most magical experiences in Germany.
Over 250 stands are gathered on several squares in the city centre and weave their way along the interconnecting, pedestrianised Rathenaustrasse. The Christmas flavour is intensified by the scents and tastes of unique gastronomic delicacies.
The city of Essen makes a point of inviting numerous countries and regions to make a memorable impression by presenting their multicultural products.
The traditional Essen Light Festival, Essener Lichtfest, is another highlight that takes place in October. Incredible light installations create an almost romantic atmosphere throughout the centre.

Centred around the Hansaplatz in the heart of the city, the Christmas market in Dortmund boasts the largest Christmas tree in Europe and perhaps the world. This impressive sight is created from 1700 individual spruce trees and is 45 metres high. It is decorated with 48,000 lamps and adorned with a 4 metre tall Angel.
One of the best Christmas markets in Germany's Ruhr Metropolis is in Bochum. The medieval market square around the Pauluskirche with its crafts stands and various delights is just one reason that hundreds of thousands of visitors return year after year. Another is the region’s one and only Flying Santa!
Original language movies are popular among expats living across the Ruhr Metropolis. Films are screened regularly in English original with subtitles, known as OmU and without, portrayed as OV. A wide variety of cinemas or movie theatres can be found, both large and small.
