ORIGINAL LANGUAGE MOVIES IN THE RUHR
Original language movies are popular in the Ruhr Metropolis. Films available to expats are screened mostly in original with subtitles, known as OmU or Original mit Untertitel and without, portrayed as OV or Original Version in a number of movie theatres.
Several opportunities are available for film lovers to view OV and OmU movies and films in Duisburg, Dortmund, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Hamm, Hagen, Oberhausen in the Ruhr region as well as Wuppertal. Run times may be short due to a limited number of original and subtitled copies in circulation. Traditionally smaller audiences too.

INDEPENDENT CINEMAS IN RUHR
The popularity of cinema has flourished in Germany since the genre’s beginnings. Early film productions became classics, while movie theatres sprouted across the country. To expats’ delight, several cinemas offer original English language movies in the Ruhr Metropolis.
These diverse, cosy and more traditional movie theatres include Babylon in Hagen, Casablanca, Endstation and Metropolis in Bochum, Filmforum in Duisburg, Lichtburg in Oberhausen as well as Schauburg in Dortmund.
FILMKUNSTTHEATER IN RUHR
The cinemas of Essener Filmkunsttheater and Lichtburg have been gathered together under the banner of Filmspiegel Essen to offer movies to audiences in the heart of the Ruhr Metropolis. Expats can enjoy many art house films and selected blockbuster movies in original English, many of which are screened with German subtitles.
Their diverse, cosy and more traditional movie theatres include Astra, Luna, Eulenspiegel, Galerie, Glückauf, Rio, Sabu and Lichtburg.
CINESTAR IN RUHR
CineStar offers relaxed multiplex movie theatres across the Ruhr Metropolis. A few show films in the original version, OV, English language. Mostly blockbuster movies are screened in Dortmund, Hagen, Oberhausen and Remscheid.
The movie theatres contain several cinemas with screens of various sizes and a varying number of seats. The experience can, of course, include traditional popcorn and soft drinks.
CINEMAXX IN RUHR
The Cinemaxx group of cinemas screens a regular selection of films in original version, OV, or original with subtitles, OmU across the Ruhr Metropolis. Movies, most of which are blockbusters, have been shown on screens in Essen, Hamm, Mülheim and Wuppertal.
Multiplex movie theatres contain several cinemas with screens of various sizes, a variety of audience sizes and typical atmosphere. Soft drinks and traditional popcorn are naturally on offer.
UCI KINOWELT RUHR
The multiplex screens of UCI Kinowelt show mostly blockbuster movies, thus fortunately presenting expats with further opportunities to view films in the original English language version. Some are accompanied by subtitles, OmU, others are not, OV.
The movie theatres in Bochum and Duisburg contains several screens of various sizes and offers typical multiplex goodies such as popcorn and soft drinks.
Staying in touch and getting together with others living in a similar situation can be important. Expat groups in social media are highly valuable sources for connecting. Socialising in the Ruhr Metropolis can include events, international clubs or heading for a popular spot to meet international residents.
