Gravestone in grassland

Cemeteries offer an excellent opportunity to explore elements of the cultural background of a location. While some find it somewhat morbid, those individuals that enjoy wandering amongst gravestones can develop a feel for the people of old. The variety of names on their obituaries proves enlightening as do the dates of birth and departure from their life on earth. The ages of the deceased can often reveal details of local occurrences.

In several towns and cities, graveyards can reveal beautiful park-like flora and fauna; open spaces that are quiet and peaceful, normally welcoming and great places to get centred and reflect upon the mysteries of destiny, fate or chance. Whatever one’s belief. Naturally, many cemeteries exist across the enormous Ruhr Metropolis and are normally open to the public.

Fine examples to take a stroll include the Jewish cemeteries in Mülheim, Duisburg and Oberhausen. Try also the Ostfriedhof Dortmund or the central cemeteries of Hauptfriedhöfe Gelsenkirchen Buer, Mülheim or Bochum and the cemetery in Essen Bredeney. Other random gravestones can be discovered in areas no longer functioning as a graveyard.

Expats wishing to discover where famous German personalities are buried can download a free app issued by the Stiftung Historische Kirchhöfe und Friedhöfe in Berlin-Brandenburg. Unfortunately nobody can be found locally, the nearest being in Düsseldorf.

Admiring quaint architecture, strolling side streets, the riverbanks or numerous woodlands brings joy to the soul.
