The Archaeological Park Xanten is Germany’s largest open-air museum for archaeology. In connection with the Roman museum, it delivers a fascinating insight into Roman history. The Park contains reconstructed full-scale buildings such as the harbour temple and Roman hostel as well as the city wall.
One special reconstruction is the amphitheatre, which in Roman times was the scene of bloody fights. Today the location hosts open air concerts, operas and musicals during the annual summer festival.
In addition to the arena, themed pavilions give insights to such topics as travel and traffic in Roman society. For children the park offers several adventurous playgrounds and a house full of Roman games.
The Roman Museum in Xanten leads visitors through local history from the invasion of their legions and the rise of a civilian metropolis to its downfall in late antiquity. As in the Archaeological Park, people are welcome to try, touch and make their own experiences.
