The German Mining Museum, Deutsches Bergbau-Museum, in Bochum is deemed to be the most important mining museum in the world. It has been collecting, preserving, investigating, exhibiting and teaching the material heritage of the mining industry since 1930.

Original machines and functional models are exhibited In many halls, allowing the visitor to comprehend the development of mining in geological, economical, cultural and social context.

The winch tower reaches over seventy metres above the ground. From the observation deck of the headgear those that are not too faint can enjoy a fascinating view over Bochum and the Ruhr region. At ground level and below, it is possible to get to know more about the techniques of coal and ore mining until the present day in the functioning, demonstrative mine.
