Any expats wishing to know more about the topic of water are invited to visit the Aquarius Water Museum in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

Located in a water tower which is over one hundred years old, the museum teems with curious interactivity for the whole family. Here visitors have an opportunity to discover nearly every aspect concerning water.

Through thirty stations, visitors are informed how drinking water is drawn from the river Ruhr, which journey it takes and what happens when it has turned to sewage. Interaction includes computer simulations. For example, visitors can regulate the level of water in the Ruhr and at the same time attempt to ensure a sufficient water supply.

In addition to many other activities, virtual journeys along the Ruhr are possible. For instance, by paddling along, observing history and watching presentations of such things as the abstraction of drinking water, water protection and shipping.

Many open spaces entice hikers into the surrounding countryside. Try heading out to wonderful hillsides and woodlands or reclaimed industrial areas. The Ruhr region also offers pathways and trail around impressive lakes or former important waterways.

We stand in a foreign culture finding ourselves pointing, gesticulating and hoping to be understood. Germans mostly speak at least some English. However, some expats relocating to Düsseldorf may wish to carry a few basic but helpful words with them for use in awkward moments.
