SURROUNDINGS IN THE RUHR
Contrary to popular belief, larger rural spaces interweave between cities and towns offering a chance to breathe in the countryside. Vast areas surrounding the main axis from Duisburg through Essen and Bochum to Dortmund reveal large spaces of natural beauty as well as wide agricultural landscapes. Small towns and villages dotted across the region complete a rural experience. Residents of Ruhr can easily spend time taking in the green surroundings and admiring much of what they see.
The countryside surrounding the region of the Ruhr Metropolis varies from undulating hills, smooth pastures and fields to steep valleys and plateaus. Local cultures, diverse traditions and a long history are all visible in and around the smaller municipalities in the vicinity.
The Dutch border is fairly close to the west while Belgium France and Luxembourg are a reachable distance to the south west. The riverside cities of Cologne and Bonn are in close vicinity also to the south west, whilst the state capital of Düsseldorf lies close by to the west.
