DRUGSTOREs IN RUHR
Consumers looking for products for general use in the household turn to one of the many local drugstores, Drogeriemärkte, in the Ruhr Metropolis. Depending on where expats originate from, the shops may have a familiar feel, others may simply be bemused or confused.
Alongside a more limited selection in supermarkets or DIY centres, drugstores stock almost everything needed in the home. Bathroom items such as tissues and toilet paper or washing powders, cleaners and detergents for kitchens and utility rooms are sold.
Creams, make up, shampoos, toothpaste, deodorants, wet wipes and further beauty care items for personal care are just an example of the wide selection of products. Food supplements or nappies and baby food can be purchased too.
Many drugs or medicines are less available over the counter than in some other countries and can only be bought in chemists or pharmacies, while a few items such as plasters are available in drugstores.
Three major companies operating drugstores across the Ruhr region are DM Drogerie Markt, Rossmann and Müller. Some products sold under their own brands repeatedly receive excellent results in consumer tests.

GERMAN FOR FUN
We stand in a foreign culture finding ourselves pointing, gesticulating and hoping to be understood. Many Germans speak at least some English. However, some expats relocating to the Ruhr Metropolis may wish to carry a few basic but helpful words with them for use in awkward moments.
MOVIES IN RUHR
Original language movies are popular among expats living across the Ruhr Metropolis. Films are screened regularly in English original with subtitles, known as OmU and without, portrayed as OV. A wide variety of cinemas or movie theatres can be found, both large and small.
It may come as a surprise to newly arrived expats that beaches can be found in the Ruhr Metropolis. Fine sand and shingle are ideal for walking, playing, relaxing and picnicking.
