One of the oldest sports in the world, lacrosse was apparently invented by indigenous American Indians. Following its introduction to students, the game gained popularity globally.

Three lacrosse clubs are in the Ruhr Metropolis. The eldest is in Essen, others are located in Bochum and Dortmund. Clubs welcome amateurs who wish to join them to improve on their playing standards and enjoy the sport.
