RUGBY IN RUHR
It may come as a surprise to some expats that rugby has been played in Germany since the end of the nineteenth century. A national team also first played in the late nineteen twenties. This unique sport art is played by teams in the Ruhr Metropolis too.
While rugby may not be wildly popular, the national league, second league as well as regional leagues such as Westfalen and Westphalen are very active.
One great example of an enthusiastic team in the Ruhr region is the Grashof Rugby Club. Some twelve nationalities of players thoroughly enjoy coming together to play the sport of rugby in Essen. Members range from school children, students, employees and migrants. Both men and women play in the club, which was originally founded in 2007 by an enthusiastic teacher of the Grashof Gymnasium.

We stand in a foreign culture finding ourselves pointing, gesticulating and hoping to be understood. Many Germans speak at least some English. However, some expats relocating to the Ruhr Metropolis may wish to carry a few basic but helpful words with them for use in awkward moments.
SOCIALISING IN RUHR
Staying in touch and getting together with others living in a similar situation can be important. Expat groups in social media are highly valuable sources for connecting. Socialising in the Ruhr Metropolis can include events, international clubs or heading for a popular spot to meet international residents.
The public transport system in Ruhr is extensive, safe and normally efficient. A dense network of trams, Strassenbahn, above and below ground as well as buses serve the cities and suburbs. Links via the local and S-Bahn train systems interconnect many neighbouring communities.
